Know your Bengaluru

Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple attracts crowds every year during Makara Sankranti. The cave shrine where Shivalinga is placed is located about 15m beneath the earth. Just before sunset on every 14th of January, a beam of sunrays enters an arch and then the shrine through 2 windows on the western wall, passes through the horns of Nandi and illuninates the Shivalinga. Research scholars have found that 2 discs, Suryapana and Chandrapana are installed in the temple courtyard to mark the solstices. This 9th century cave temple, located in Gavipuram off Bull Temple road, was renovated by Kempe Gowda in the 16th century. Scientists of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium who studied the temple have discovered that the phenomenon also occurs on Nov 30 and Dec 1, which was not acknowledged by the temple authorities for fear of losing the crowds on Makara Sankranti!  Read more about Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple ...
